Branden Johannesen
branden@sancarloscrossfit.com
Branden Johannesen is an owner of San Carlos Crossfit and a CrossFit Level 1 instructor. He has completed several certifications and seminars related to CrossFit and its training principles: CrossFit Basic Barbell, Olympic Weightlifting, Basic Gymnastics, and Training Injured Athletes.
Growing up in San Diego allowed ample time for year round water and outdoor sports, which took a stronghold on Branden, at the early age of three. After playing and competing in soccer for 13 years, the focus switched to grappling and a study of the martial arts. Moving up to Northern California to attend UC Santa Cruz in 1997, he began teaching martial arts, eagerly coaching his friends, and expanding his appetite for physical expression, which soon led to a new love for rock climbing, snowboarding and mountain biking. This addiction to the outdoors encouraged an Earth Sciences degree, and kept him in Nor Cal, seeking new challenges. After competing in the 2007 TransRockies, cycling volume had taken its toll and it was time to become reacquainted with a more holistic approach to training his body; enter CrossFit.
After testing a couple workouts, reuniting with trainer Ryan, and conferring with a few of his old college friends, like Greg Amundson and Sam Radetsky, the deal was sealed. Ryan and Branden then began a whirlwind of training and knowledge seeking, which has carved a path to the new doors of San Carlos CrossFit. Branden is dedicated to building a great community at this facility. His greatest reward is inspiring clients of all backgrounds and capacities. Branden believes that life is about the journey and embracing it with a strong and healthy body, leads to a strong and healthy mind, with which great things can be achieved.
“If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”

Luis Velasquez
luis@sancarloscrossfit.com
Luis Velasquez is an owner of San Carlos CrossFit and the person that will get you ready for any endurance event. Luis’ resume is varied, but in short, he is an endurance junkie, a brain tumor survivor and a business consultant. Luis has competed and completed many endurance events including several Ironman races, numerous ultra runs (he is not sure of the exact number), including several at the 100 mile range. His biggest race has been against a brain tumor which he is still fighting. He is CrossFit Endurance Certified and uses CrossFit endurance with the athletes he coaches and with his own training.
His introduction to CrossFit was after running an inroman triathlon. He came back injured and frustrated about his performance. He decided to take a break from triathlon training and was looking for something to do while recovering. Enter CrossFit, after a few weeks he was hooked. He started running and biking again and realized he was much stronger and faster because of CrossFit, that was it, the deal was sealed. He went back the following year to do another ironman triathlon with much less training; he PR’d by almost an hour. Ask him about how CrossFit changed the way his training goes and he will tell you his experience, he loves to talk about it. He also blogs about his running.
Luis education and background is eclectic, he has a double PhD, an MBA and a MS, his day job is with a consulting firm working with clients all over the world. He is also a motivational speaker and his passion for CrossFit and endurance events is evident, he will help you get ready for your event whether it is a 5K, a half or full marathon an ironman triathlon or an ultra marathon. His motto is “you cannot control the rain, but you can control if you get wet or not”
